The Yorktown class carrier was designed to work around the limitations of
the Early warp drive systems, ships that had long enough range to reach deep
inside Romulan space had to be large, and as such had poor manoeuvrability.
The Yorktown carried 5 Minotaur class Strike vessels that could strike fast
at enemy targets and then return to the mother ship for rearming or
extraction.
