The G-4 K’Marr class transport is all but forgotten, but
the design is one of the best recognized in known space. The vessel is best
known by the commercial freighter it has now become, the Monarch. However,
the G-4 served the Klingon Empire loyally until the mid-2250s, when it was
retired by the Klingon Navy after sustaining heavy losses due to its lack of
weaponry and general performance deficiencies during the Four Years War.
The G-4 was designed in the mid 2230s and was intended to be
a heavy transport for Imperial Marines as well as serving as a freighter.
However, in 2239 (1/82), contact with the mysterious Kinshaya race caused
the G-4 to be rushed into production with several modifications before full
testing could be completed. Combat losses and damages were at a staggering
rate during the first stages of the war and Klingon shipyards could barely
keep up with the demand for parts. All warp drives, shield generators, and
weapons systems were in great demand for the frontline forces. The demand
for troops and supplies was great, so the G-4 was pressed into service.
Instead of the two warp engines it was designed for, only one KWA-1 warp
drive was installed. This lessened the load it could carry, but for the
Klingons, it was a necessary sacrifice. In addition, due to the strain on
supply, no weapons were mounted on the G-4- all had to be saved for
frontline vessels. These modified vessels became the G-4 B model.
After the Demon War, the Klingons continued to build the G-4
B, unconcerned with initiating the G-4 A proposal of dual warp engines and
weaponry mounts. The G-4 was also used by commercial interests within the
Empire, but rarely without due to its lack of armament. The G-4 is still
used today by private interests within the Empire.
The G-4 class did not receive a class name until after the
Demon War when it was named the K’Marr class. Klingon stories of K’Marr
liken him to what can only be compared to as a "squire" from
ancient Terran history. K’Marr did chores for Kahless, carried his arms
and armor and cared for them, and aspired to be like the great warrior
himself. In an effort to gain Kahless’s favor, K’Marr left without
permission and adventured alone, where he was killed by enemies of Kahless.
After Kahless discovered K’Marr’s body, he massacred the entire village
from which the enemies came. The use of K’Marr for the class name of a
transport/freighter is a great honor and pays tribute to the crews of the
G-4 who went into battle supporting Klingon forces during the Demon War.
