When funding for the remaining 15 Ptolemy class transports was cut,
Starfleet decided to complete the remaining work orders by building a
lighter, cheaper transport using parts and components in good supply. Using
the same hull as the Ptolemy class, the Keppler class transport was built
using the FHLWA-1 engines and the FIB-1 impulse engine.
This modified version was first built in 2247 alongside the standard
version, it featured more discreet hull mounted deflectors as opposed to the
large dish of the standard ships. Post war most of the class were converted
to this standard, which gave no performance benefits, but considerably
improved reliability.
